Press Release: Erin Murphy Announces New Measures To Curb Gun Violence

SAINT PAUL, MN – Erin Murphy and Erin Maye-Quade, DFL-Endorsed ticket for governor and lieutenant governor, stood with gun violence prevention advocates, parents, teachers, and students today to announce the steps they will take to curb gun violence.

“Minnesotans are demanding action on gun violence prevention,” said Murphy. “The NRA has had a seat at the table on this issue for too long, silencing the voices of Minnesotans who overwhelmingly support common-sense gun violence prevention efforts like universal background checks. As Governor, I will not be silent on the urgent need for common sense gun reform and my lifetime “F” rating from the NRA is proof that I have and will stand with Minnesotans to get results.”

Rep. Erin Maye-Quade said, “Minnesotans are frustrated, students are scared for their lives, and we’ve all had enough. When I sat in at the Capitol to demand action, I heard and felt the support from every corner of the state. We know what we need to do to stop gun violence. We just need leaders with the courage to do it.”

Teachers and students shared powerful stories about the urgency to address gun violence at the press conference.

“I led the walkout at my school because I believe that gun violence is an issue that transcends political divides,” said Serena Abraham, Senior at Apple Valley High School. “The continuous stalemate on gun reform is exhausting. The hundreds of lives lost is exhausting. The ‘thoughts and prayers’ are exhausting. Kids who are 15 should never have to stare down the barrel of an AR-15 again.”

“It is time to enact common sense gun laws,” said Katie Bernardy, a Middle School Teacher at Heritage Middle School. “I want to look my students in the face and tell them that they honestly don’t have to worry about losing their lives in my classroom nor any classroom across America.”

Action to End Gun Violence:

It’s time for immediate action to end gun violence. Erin Murphy is the only candidate in this race with the courage to lead on the issue.

As governor, Erin will:

  • Keep military-style weapons out of the hands of civilians, including banning weapons like the AR-15.

  • Require universal background checks for all gun purchases.

  • Enact a Red Flag law to allow law enforcement to intervene when a person possessing or seeking to purchase a firearm is considered a threat to themselves or the community.

  • Ban high-capacity magazines and increase waiting periods on certain firearms.

  • Require built-in safety measures like fingerprints or trigger locks that limit accidents and allow Minnesotans to hold gun manufacturers responsible when they don’t.

  • Study gun violence like the public health crisis that it is.

  • Invest in support services for survivors of gun violence.

  • Ban the production and possession of 3D printed guns and other untraceable firearms.

Murphy renewed her call for Congressman Walz and Attorney General Swanson to join her for a debate on gun violence prevention. To date, neither have responded.

“Minnesotans want a Governor who will show up for them and lead on gun violence prevention, but Congressman Walz and Attorney General Swanson have only shown a willingness to shift their positions when it’s politically expedient,” said Murphy. “Stopping the NRA and passing common sense gun reform requires leaders to stand with Minnesotans and fight for change. Minnesotans can trust that as Governor, I will.”

Press Release: Erin Murphy Announces Our Promise Education Agenda with Governor Dayton

SAINT PAUL, MN – Erin Murphy, DFL-Endorsed candidate for governor, joined Governor Mark Dayton to announce the Our Promise Education Agenda, a commitment to an education system that supports all Minnesota’s kids from cradle to career. The ambitious agenda builds on Governor Dayton’s legacy to ensure Minnesota closes the opportunity gap and supports schools to make sure they are meeting the needs of the 21st century.

“As we face workforce shortages in our future, it’s critical that we build an education system that is as ambitious and hopeful as our kids,” said Erin Murphy. “I was proud to work with Governor Dayton as Majority Leader to increase education funding, close funding gaps, and pass all day kindergarten. I look forward to carrying on Governor Dayton’s legacy as a champion for education to ensure every child has a bright start.”

“I'm confident the future of our students and schools will be in good hands with Erin Murphy as our next governor," said Governor Mark Dayton. "Her commitments to equity, to making sure every child has access to early learning opportunities that prepare them to learn, and to ensuring every student graduates ready for their next steps postsecondary, are second to none. I'm proud to support her and will do everything I can to make sure Minnesotans turn out to support Erin on August 14th."

Murphy recognizes that there are factors outside the classroom that impact kids’ ability to learn. The Our Promise Education Agenda builds on her previous proposals, like the Pathway to Single-Payer healthcare plan, #ConnectMN border-to-border broadband proposal, and her Fight for Families package. Together, they provide a stable foundation to ensure kids and families have the support and resources they need to build their bright future.

A Great Start for Every Child

The best way to close opportunity gaps and get kids on a path to success is to start early.

As Governor Erin will:

  • Continue Governor Dayton’s legacy, expanding high-quality early learning opportunities and voluntary preschool for every child whose family chooses it.

  • Extend early learning scholarships for kids 0-3, fully fund the Child Care Assistance Program, and expand home visiting services to provide stabilizing support to families in need.

Equity in Education

Minnesota has one of the worst racial opportunity gaps for education outcomes in the nation. To close those gaps, it’ll take an all-hands-on-deck approach.

As Governor, Erin will:

  • Expand full-service community schools that leverage the power of community-based services and collaboration to create rich learning environments for students of all ages.

  • Expand culturally-responsive academic programs and increase support for curriculum-based, college-readiness programs that disproportionately serve low-income students and/or students of color.

  • Invest in a teaching workforce that reflects Minnesota’s diverse student population.

Blueprint for Great Schools

21st-century students don’t need 20th-century high schools. Erin believes it’s time to rethink how our high schools make sure students graduate well prepared for college or career.

As Governor, Erin will:

  • Expand technical education opportunities, connecting students to experiences that help them discover their passion.

  • Restore funding for positions that offer support to students, like nurses, school counselors and librarians, to allow classroom teachers to focus on student learning.

  • Support school building improvements to ensure students and staff are safe and secure and learning in a comfortable environment.

Press Release: Murphy Renews Call For Debate On Gun Violence

SAINT PAUL, MN— Today, Erin Murphy, DFL-Endorsed candidate for governor, repeated her call for her primary opponents to join her in debating common-sense measures to stem gun violence.

"It's been a week since I asked my opponents to sit down for a conversation about the steps that we're each prepared to take to stop gun violence," said Murphy. "With two weeks left until Primary Day, I'm still waiting for a response. Minnesotans deserve to know where each candidate stands on common-sense gun violence prevention measures and the refusal to engage from my opponents is disappointing."

On July 23, Murphy sent a letter to the Swanson/Nolan and Walz/Flanagan campaigns asking Attorney General Swanson and Congressman Tim Walz to join her in a debate on gun reform. Murphy asked that the debate be live-streamed so Minnesotans across our state can hear the candidates' opinions, take a hard look at their records, ask questions, and decide which one is best suited to represent their values. Murphy is also the only candidate for Governor that has responded in a transparent manner to the Students Demand Action challenge to release past NRA questionnaires.

Press Release: Murphy Shares Progressive Vision for Healthcare, Working Families, and Connecting Across the State During Mankato Debate

MANKATO, MN— Today, Erin Murphy, DFL-Endorsed candidate for governor, outlined a bold progressive vision for the future of Minnesota at a debate hosted by the Coalition of Greater Minnesota Cities, Greater Mankato Growth, and Greater Minnesota Partnership.  The debate covered a wide variety of topics.

Erin Murphy On Healthcare:

“The #1 issue that I hear from people living on farms is healthcare and the cost of healthcare.  I’m a single payer healthcare supporter. It’s time for us to lead the nation again like we did 26 years ago when we passed MinnesotaCare.”

Erin Murphy On Connecting Across The State:

“I’ll open regional offices – eight of them - because it’s time for us to stitch ourselves back together again. One way to do that is to connect government to the lives of Minnesotans. It’s important for bridging that feeling of being left behind.”

Erin Murphy On Greater Minnesota Development:

“It’s time to connect Minnesota.  It’s time to finish this job. Broadband is critical to commerce, health care, and keeping Minnesotans connected to one another.  We know that disparities between urban and rural on broadband are real. We have to get this done.”

Press Release: Murphy Unveils Connect MN Plan to Ensure High-Speed Internet for All Minnesotans

SAINT PAUL, MN— Today, Erin Murphy, DFL-Endorsed candidate for governor released the Connect MN plan which aims to provide border-to-border broadband internet access to all Minnesotans by 2026. Murphy’s plan will use the new sales tax revenue generated by the Supreme Court’s decision allowing Minnesota to collect sales tax from select out of state online retailers to provide a dedicated investment of more than $100 million each year into Minnesota’s Broadband Development Grant Program. The plan leverages additional private investments to connect Minnesota families, farmers, business owners, and schools to high-speed internet to further growth and opportunity.

“For too long, we have talked about the importance of broadband at the Capitol without the investment needed to address the scope of the challenge,” said Murphy. “When I am Governor, we will move forward with a strategic plan that will connect every Minnesotan with the high-speed internet they need to succeed.”

A broad coalition of government and private sector leaders have acknowledged the great need to invest in broadband internet, but funding has come up woefully short in recent years. Murphy’s plan would provide a dedicated source of revenue to meet the challenge facing Minnesotans.

Murphy will pay for her plan by using new revenue generated by the Supreme Court’s South Dakota v. Wayfair decision, which provided new revenue for the state of Minnesota by compelling out-of-state retailers with no physical presence in Minnesota to collect and remit sales tax on purchases delivered to Minnesota. The United States Government Accountability Office estimates this sales tax will raise between $132 - $206 million per year. Murphy said utilizing this new revenue to expand online access is a strategic path to ensure every Minnesotan has access to high-speed Internet.

Currently, 550,000 households, more than 26 percent across the state, lack access to high-speed internet. Largely in greater Minnesota, this lack of connectivity causes significant barriers for our students, farmers, and small business owners. Murphy’s plan is based on the statutory internet speed goals of 100 Mbps down and 20 Mbps up by 2026. This baseline will allow small business owners to keep up with the speed of business, students to complete their homework online without interruptions, and will ensure global connectivity for all Minnesotans.

Universal access to broadband spurs innovation and drives economic development, education, healthcare and quality of life. One study indicates that a community will see a $10 return on investment for every $1 invested in broadband.

“This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to make progress on an issue holding back too many Minnesotans in communities all over the state,” said Murphy. “It’s a critical step in ensuring that everyone in Minnesota can build a bright future for themselves and their families.”

Press Release: Erin Murphy pushing for statewide response to improve handling of sexual assault cases

ST. PAUL, MN - Today, Rep. Erin Murphy, DFL-endorsed candidate for governor, and Rep. Erin Maye-Quade, DFL-endorsed candidate for lieutenant governor, are pushing for improved handling of sexual assault cases by law enforcement after an investigative report by the Star Tribune found systemic problems. Murphy proposed a statewide task force to audit sex crimes investigations, new efforts to center the voices of survivors in the process, and other measures to address barriers that are keeping women from reporting sexual assault and rape, and preventing justice from being served.

“We have a systemic crisis in Minnesota that requires all of us to take action and deliver justice for survivors,” said Rep. Erin Murphy. “The women who shared their stories in the Star Tribune article and the thousands of unnamed individuals like them deserve better. Our law enforcement agencies, our justice system, and our leaders must commit to stronger investigation and prosecution of the perpetrators of these violent crimes.”

“Women who are the victims of rape and sexual assault should have confidence that they will be believed, that their case will be opened, investigated and aggressively pursued,” said Representative Erin Maye-Quade. “The recommendations we’re making today are important steps toward justice and healing for survivors.”

"The survivors who are breaking the silence right now are acting with immense courage,” said Sarah Super, Founder of Break the Silence, a survivor and advocate. “These are true leaders in our community - the ones who will allow other survivors to follow. We need elected officials who will stand with us and demand action."

The Star Tribune report revealed a systemic crisis in the manner law enforcement investigates sexual assaults and other sex offenses. Persistent barriers prevent women from reporting sexual assault, keep rapists on the streets, and stop justice from being served. Of thousands of cases studied by the Star Tribune, only seven percent of rape cases resulted in a conviction. Murphy is calling for a series of measures to address systemic failures that are preventing justice for survivors of sexual assault.

Erin Murphy is proposing a series of measures as part of a statewide response:

Establish a statewide task force to audit sex crimes investigations: Direct the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension to develop a statewide task force of survivors advocates, retired investigators and experts, prosecutors, and law enforcement officials to audit the investigations of sexual offenses in every corner of the state and compile a series of actionable sexual assault response standards.

Center survivors and expand victims services: Expand the role and mandate of the Office of Victims of Crime in the Department of Public Safety to ensure that sexual assault victims are always put first in the process, not just to seek justice, but to heal after trauma.

Ensure that investigators are properly trained and using best practices: Work with law enforcement officials to require that detectives and others that investigate sex crimes are specially trained to do so. Currently, they are not required to have this training. In addition, require that each Minnesota law enforcement agency has a written policy governing the response and investigation of sexual assault investigation, which is the longstanding requirement for domestic violence cases.

Assign an investigator to every complaint, just like we do with homicides: Work with law enforcement officials and provide resources to ensure that in Minnesota, an investigator is assigned to every rape case, just like we do with homicides.

Improve Minnesota’s rape kit test law and require law enforcement to test every kit, with the victim’s consent: Provide needed resources and policy change to ensure all rape kits are tested when the victim consents. In 2015 the legislature mandated a survey of untested rape kits after finding thousands sitting untested at police and sheriff’s departments and hospitals, but loopholes and challenges in funding remain.

Press Release: Murphy calls on DFL Opponents to Show Up for Minnesotans: Swanson Not Leading on Gun Violence Prevention

SAINT PAUL, MN – This morning, Attorney General Lori Swanson backed out and Congressman Tim Walz declined to participate in a WCCO roundtable hosted by Blois Olson that was to include all three DFL candidates running for Governor. Only DFL-Endorsed candidate Erin Murphy appeared for the forum, which they had been invited to more than two weeks prior. According to Blois Olson, Congressman Walz chose to record a TV ad instead of appearing for the forum and Attorney General Swanson backed out at the last minute.

Earlier this week, both Walz and Swanson, and their running mates, also declined to participate in a voter forum hosted by JustUs about LGBTQ issues. Erin Murphy, DFL-Endorsed candidate for Governor, released the following statement, urging her opponents to commit to at least five forums by media and advocacy organizations before the primary.

“Minnesotans want a Governor who will show up and fight for them. That is what I have heard in my conversations with Minnesotans all across this state in the twenty months I have been in this campaign. With less than five weeks before the DFL Primary, it is unfortunate that my DFL opponents are not interested in engaging in a conversation about the urgent issues facing Minnesotans and how we solve them – especially Attorney General Swanson.

“Lori filed for Governor on the last possible day, after telling Minnesotans for months she wouldn’t seek the office. In the five weeks since, she has declined to participate or backed out of a number of public events, especially those where she would be expected to face questions from Minnesotans or reporters about her priorities. Minnesotans deserve more from anyone seeking to serve as our next Governor.

“I hope my opponents will step it up, because playing it safe and ducking the tough issues is a recipe for failure in this election. Now is a time to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with Minnesotans and fight for our values. That’s how we win this election and build a bright future for Minnesota.”

Press Release: Erin Murphy’s Statement On Jeff Johnson’s Divisive, Hateful Rhetoric On Refugees

ST. PAUL, MN – Rep. Erin Murphy, DFL-Endorsed candidate for Governor released the following statement after Jeff Johnson announced his plan to withdraw Minnesota from our commitment to aid refugees from around the world:

“This is divisive, hateful rhetoric being used as a cynical campaign tactic,” said Murphy. “Jeff Johnson and Tim Pawlenty are tripping over each other to see who can do more to divide us, turn us against our neighbors, and demonize families from around the world who are fleeing violence, terror, and famine in much the same way as many of our Hmong and Somali neighbors were. Minnesota needs a governor that has never wavered in their commitment to opening our nation and our state to those that need our help and has never backed away from the challenge of living our values as a welcoming nation.”

Press Release: Erin Murphy Unveils Pathway to Single-Payer to Make Sure Every Minnesotan Gets Health Care They Need

SAINT PAUL, MN – Every Minnesotan deserves health care they can count on and the freedom that comes from knowing you always have access to the health care you need. Erin Murphy, the DFL-Endorsed candidate for Governor, declared this today at a press conference in St. Paul where she laid out her “Pathway to Single-Payer” plan, a roadmap setting Minnesota up to lead the nation by becoming the first state to provide guaranteed, affordable health care to everyone.

Murphy, a registered nurse and health care leader at the State Capitol, will build on her decades of work to provide affordable, comprehensive coverage to Minnesotans that prioritizes the needs of Minnesotans over the greed of corporations. As Governor, Murphy will fight for a pathway to single-payer that establishes MinnesotaCare for all, putting health care decisions back in the hands of patients and medical professionals by cutting out the corporate middleman, and taking action to ensure that Minnesotans are able to afford needed medications.

“I know health care from every angle, as a nurse supporting patients and families, a state legislator fighting for better health for Minnesotans, and as a daughter who navigated my mom’s battle with cancer,” said Murphy. “I am bringing a bold vision for action that reflects the urgency that Minnesota families face every day. As Governor, I will fight for a future where every Minnesotan is able to get the care they need, when they need it.”

Even with the progress of the Affordable Care Act, nearly 349,000 Minnesotans remain uninsured, in large part due to high premiums, out-of-pocket costs, and other gimmicks that make health care coverage unnecessarily complex to navigate and too expensive. Families, seniors, and small businesses must navigate endless paperwork, confusion around what and how much is covered, and the seemingly endless parade of profit-seeking middlemen getting in between the patient and their doctor or nurse. All the while, big pharmaceutical companies are raking in obscene profits and insurance companies continue making millions of dollars while more Minnesotans go without care or are forced to choose between keeping a roof over their head and their medications.

“Families, seniors, farmers, small business owners and just about anyone who has experienced our frustrating health care system can relate to the sense that there must be a better way. Minnesotans are right,” said Murphy. “When Minnesotans have the flu, need cancer treatment, are treating diabetes, or have an accident they need to know they can get and afford the care they need. Right now, far too many Minnesotans aren’t able to access or afford that care. That changes when I become Governor.”

Murphy’s “Pathway to Single-Payer” recognizes that health care is the foundation for the overall well-being and financial security for Minnesotans across the state. Her plan focuses on improving the health of Minnesotans while getting private health insurers, pharmaceutical companies, and other special interests out of the way of the decisions between Minnesotans and their medical providers.

Erin Murphy’s Pathway to Single-Payer:

MinnesotaCare for All: Murphy will expand affordable, comprehensive coverage through MinnesotaCare by allowing Minnesotans and small businesses to access the program as it is currently structured. This will help create stability for Minnesotans and small businesses, ensuring people can afford medications, and knowing that the premium stays the same regardless of where someone lives. Murphy will include a MinnesotaCare Buy-In for all Minnesotans option in her 2019 budget proposal.

Buying Health Care Directly from Providers: Murphy will direct the Department of Human Services to expand direct contracting with health care providers to take health plan profits and reinvest them into the health and patient care of Minnesotans. In doing so, Minnesota will be putting people back in the driver seat of their care by cutting out the profit-driven insurance providers that act as a middle-man between patients and their health care provider. Minnesota is already a leader in this work thanks to legislation championed by Murphy that has already generated more than $213 million in savings to the state.

Making needed medications affordable to all Minnesotans: Murphy will fight back against the skyrocketing price of prescription drugs by leveraging the purchasing power of the state to negotiate directly with drug manufacturers. In addition, Murphy will fight for innovative reforms, like importing cheaper drugs from Canada, modeled after legislation that was recently passed in Vermont to combat the high cost of prescription drugs.

Single-Payer Health Care: MinnesotaCare for All and buying health care directly from providers are vital reforms that lay the foundation for single-payer health care for all Minnesotans. Taking the profit-driven middleman out of the decisions between Minnesotans and their medical providers will create a far more efficient, cost-effective, and simpler health care system where every Minnesotan is guaranteed access to affordable, comprehensive care.

“Now is not a time for a tippy-toe kind of politics, we need bold reforms that center on the health of Minnesotans over the profits of the health insurance and pharmaceutical industries,” said Murphy. “We can and must invest in the greatest resource this state has to offer – our people.”

Murphy will travel the state over the next two days, talking with voters about her vision for a state where every Minnesotan gets and can afford the care they need.

National Nurses United Endorses Erin Murphy for Minnesota Governor

National Nurses United (NNU), the nation’s largest union of registered nurses, today announced its endorsement of Minnesota State Representative Erin Murphy for governor of Minnesota.

“We are endorsing Erin because she’s a proven champion fighting for all Minnesotans,” said Jean Ross, RN, co-president of NNU and resident of Bloomington, Minn. “As a registered nurse herself, Erin stands for nurses’ values of caring, compassion and community—values that most Minnesotans share. National Nurses United is proud to support her.”

Nurses cited Murphy’s leadership during her term as Minnesota House Majority Leader in protecting and expanding MinnesotaCare, her firm commitment to bring single-payer Medicare for All to Minnesota so that everyone in the state has guaranteed, therapeutic health care, her dedication to eliminate disparities that unfairly impact people of color, and her efforts to rectify the short staffing crisis that continues to negatively impact patient care in hospitals across the state.

“Erin has been an impressive leader in the Minnesota legislature and will be able to utilize those skills as the next governor of our state for the benefit of all who live here,” said Mary Turner, President of the Minnesota Nurses Association, NNU’s Minnesota affiliate representing 21,000 RNs throughout the state. “Erin is the only candidate for governor who advocates for the right of everyone in the state to have guaranteed health care, something that is a top priority for the state’s registered nurses. We urge all voters to support her.”

Murphy is speaking about her single-payer health care plan at events across the state this week, including today in St. Paul, tomorrow in Mankato, Rochester and Winona, and Thursday in Brainerd and Duluth.

“I’m incredibly proud to receive the endorsement of National Nurses United,” said Murphy. “At this critical moment in our politics, we need progressive leadership and I look forward to fighting shoulder-to-shoulder with NNU for health and justice for every Minnesotan. I learned from nursing that you always dig in on the hard issues and you never walk away from a patient; it’s how I’ve led for the past 12 years at the legislature and how I’ll continue to lead as the next governor of Minnesota.”

“Our current health care system is broken, benefitting the industry and monied interests. They are powerful, but the people are more powerful,” said Murphy. “Now is our time. When we stand up for young people, farmers, nurses, teachers, refugees and immigrants, and our elders, we can make true progress. Minnesota has the ability to guarantee that no one dies or goes bankrupt from lack of care. We can show the country what it looks like to lead and put the well-being of people first.”

Press Release: Murphy calls on Pawlenty to step down from corporate boards

ST. PAUL, MN – Rep. Erin Murphy, DFL-Endorsed candidate for Governor is calling on Tim Pawlenty to step down from his paid corporate board positions. While running for Governor, Pawlenty continues to hold his corporate board positions, from which he receives large sums of money.

According to a report from Minnesota Public Radio, Tim Pawlenty currently serves on the boards of Texas-based Smart Sand and Eagan-based ConvergeOne, a technology consulting company. As recently as a few months ago he made tens of thousands of dollars in stock options in this role.

Murphy released the following statement:

“Tim Pawlenty is the poster child for everything that is wrong with our politics, where the wealthy and powerful control politicians who put corporate interests ahead of the public interest. That kind of politics has hurt Minnesotans and prevented progress on things like better wages, affordable health care, and investments in our schools.

“Just look at Pawlenty’s record as Governor. When Pawlenty was Governor, he protected corporate special interests at every turn and Minnesotans paid the price in cuts to our schools, health care, higher tuition and worse. After leaving the state high-and-dry with a record budget deficit, he cashed-in to make a fortune as a lobbyist for powerful corporate interests in Washington D.C. Now we learn that Pawlenty continues to reap huge personal benefits by sitting on corporate boards.

“Minnesotans are looking for a Governor who will fight for them, but Tim Pawlenty has proven he will only fight for himself and his corporate pals. I call on Tim Pawlenty to step down from these corporate boards immediately. This is an unsuitable arrangement for a person who seeks to represent all Minnesotans as our next Governor.’’

Press Release: Erin Murphy Statement on Anti-Worker Supreme Court Ruling

SAINT PAUL, MN – Erin Murphy, DFL-Endorsed candidate for Governor released the following statement after the Supreme Court ruled today against working people in Janus v. AFSCME.

“The GOP’s relentless attack on working people has caused enormous damage to our state and country. But this ruling, despite being an attack on the freedom to come together in union and a setback on paper, is going to be different. Union members in Minnesota have used Janus as a call to action, organized more deeply and intensely than ever, and are going to emerge stronger. This is a bad day for working families and public policy, but I stand with those that are making sure it’s the start of a new and more powerful future for organized labor and a movement for working people.”

Press Release: Erin Murphy statement on Supreme Court ruling on Trump’s Muslim Travel Ban

SAINT PAUL, MN – Erin Murphy, DFL-Endorsed candidate for Governor released the following statement after the Supreme Court today ruled to uphold President Trump’s Muslim travel ban.

“This Supreme Court ruling to uphold President Trump’s divisive, hateful agenda is discrimination against our Muslim neighbors, plain and simple. It’s wrong and we must fight back, as Americans and as Minnesotans, standing together.

We must never retreat from our values of care and compassion for our fellow neighbors. We must lead with the belief that our differences are a source of strength, not something that should be feared.

As governor, I will stand up to this administration, using all the legal options available to the state, to challenge this flagrant violation of our laws and values. I ask Minnesotans to join me in this fight because we are strongest when we stand united to uphold our values.”

SAINT PAUL, MN – Stonewall DFL announced today that they have endorsed Rep. Erin Murphy for Governor and Rep. Erin Maye-Quade for Lieutenant Governor. Stonewall DFL works for a safe and equitable Minnesota and offers endorsements for local, state and federal DFL candidates who support equality for all Minnesotans.

“Stonewall DFL is proud to endorse Erin Murphy for Governor and Erin Maye-Quade for Lieutenant Governor. Our membership’s support for Rep. Erin Murphy has grown throughout the year, mirroring the strength the Murphy campaign showed in earning the DFL endorsement,” said Erica Mauter, Stonewall DFL Caucus Chair. “We are equally proud and excited to support the historic nomination of Minnesota’s first out LGBTQ major party candidate for statewide office in Rep. Erin Maye-Quade. At a time when the LGBTQ+ community – especially queer youth and queer people of color – are struggling with access to affordable housing and health care, and all the disproportionate ways we are criminalized and targeted with violence, we desperately need leaders like Erin Murphy and Erin Maye-Quade who will fight for us.”

“We are honored to receive the Stonewall DFL endorsement,” said Rep. Erin Murphy. “I’m proud of our work together to pass marriage equality and anti-bullying legislation, but there is still more work to be done. No Minnesotan should feel unsafe or discriminated against because of who they love or how they identify. Rep. Maye-Quade and I will stand with our LGBTQ community to make sure everyone feels welcome in our state.”

“I am honored to earn this endorsement and I am proud to stand with Erin Murphy and our LGBTQ community in the important work ahead,” said Rep. Erin Maye-Quade. “As a state representative and member of the LGBTQ community, I have fought against forces of division and discrimination against our community and been a proactive leader addressing the many challenges that remain. Together, with Erin Murphy, we will continue to lead with our values and fight for an equitable future for all.”

Press Release: Rep. Erin Murphy and Rep. Maye Quade Endorsed by Emily’s List

SAINT PAUL, MN – Today, DFL-Endorsed Erin Murphy and Rep. Erin Maye Quade earned Emily’s List’s endorsement for Governor and Lt. Governor of Minnesota. EMILY’s List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, delivers more momentum to the Murphy/Maye-Quade ticket, which earned the DFL endorsement last week and the support of Governor Mark Dayton on Monday.

Statement from Rep. Erin Murphy:

“I am proud to earn the endorsement of EMILY’s List, an organization with a powerful track record supporting the campaigns of women who know how to fight and know how to win. Minnesotans want great schools, economic security, affordable health care, and we care about one another. As Governor, I will focus on these shared values and work with Minnesotans to deliver results on the tough issues we face and build a bright future together.”

Statement from Rep. Erin Maye Quade:

“We are honored to earn the endorsement of EMILY’s List and are committed to the hard work ahead in this campaign to build a bright future for Minnesota. As we talk with Minnesotans and listen to their hopes and concerns, it is clear they are asking more of their elected leaders. They want us to take on the issues central to their daily lives and put people before political games. That’s what Erin Murphy and I will continue to do in this campaign and how we will lead our state forward.”

Statement from Emily Cain, executive director of EMILY’s List:

“Erin Murphy is a proven leader who knows firsthand, from legislative and personal experience, the issues that matter most to Minnesotans, especially access to quality, affordable health care. When her mother was diagnosed with cancer, Erin, who is a registered nurse, had to navigate the complex health care system and fight with her other’s insurance ompany at every turn. This experience ignited in Erin a desire to ensure that policy – health-related and otherwise – works for working families. She ran for the Minnesota House, where she has served as a legislator for over a decade. This same desire is what drives her to serve fellow Minnesotans in the state’s highest office now.

“Both of these women have what it takes to fight and win for Minnesota’s families, and they have both earned the state party’s endorsement. One of the ticket’s potential Republican opponents is former governor Tim Pawlenty, a well-funded candidate who’s working hard to undo progress in the state. EMILY’s List is excited to show both Erins our full support and help Minnesota make history by electing this all-woman ticket.”
