Press Release: Erin Murphy Announces Our Promise Education Agenda with Governor Dayton

SAINT PAUL, MN – Erin Murphy, DFL-Endorsed candidate for governor, joined Governor Mark Dayton to announce the Our Promise Education Agenda, a commitment to an education system that supports all Minnesota’s kids from cradle to career. The ambitious agenda builds on Governor Dayton’s legacy to ensure Minnesota closes the opportunity gap and supports schools to make sure they are meeting the needs of the 21st century.

“As we face workforce shortages in our future, it’s critical that we build an education system that is as ambitious and hopeful as our kids,” said Erin Murphy. “I was proud to work with Governor Dayton as Majority Leader to increase education funding, close funding gaps, and pass all day kindergarten. I look forward to carrying on Governor Dayton’s legacy as a champion for education to ensure every child has a bright start.”

“I'm confident the future of our students and schools will be in good hands with Erin Murphy as our next governor," said Governor Mark Dayton. "Her commitments to equity, to making sure every child has access to early learning opportunities that prepare them to learn, and to ensuring every student graduates ready for their next steps postsecondary, are second to none. I'm proud to support her and will do everything I can to make sure Minnesotans turn out to support Erin on August 14th."

Murphy recognizes that there are factors outside the classroom that impact kids’ ability to learn. The Our Promise Education Agenda builds on her previous proposals, like the Pathway to Single-Payer healthcare plan, #ConnectMN border-to-border broadband proposal, and her Fight for Families package. Together, they provide a stable foundation to ensure kids and families have the support and resources they need to build their bright future.

A Great Start for Every Child

The best way to close opportunity gaps and get kids on a path to success is to start early.

As Governor Erin will:

  • Continue Governor Dayton’s legacy, expanding high-quality early learning opportunities and voluntary preschool for every child whose family chooses it.

  • Extend early learning scholarships for kids 0-3, fully fund the Child Care Assistance Program, and expand home visiting services to provide stabilizing support to families in need.

Equity in Education

Minnesota has one of the worst racial opportunity gaps for education outcomes in the nation. To close those gaps, it’ll take an all-hands-on-deck approach.

As Governor, Erin will:

  • Expand full-service community schools that leverage the power of community-based services and collaboration to create rich learning environments for students of all ages.

  • Expand culturally-responsive academic programs and increase support for curriculum-based, college-readiness programs that disproportionately serve low-income students and/or students of color.

  • Invest in a teaching workforce that reflects Minnesota’s diverse student population.

Blueprint for Great Schools

21st-century students don’t need 20th-century high schools. Erin believes it’s time to rethink how our high schools make sure students graduate well prepared for college or career.

As Governor, Erin will:

  • Expand technical education opportunities, connecting students to experiences that help them discover their passion.

  • Restore funding for positions that offer support to students, like nurses, school counselors and librarians, to allow classroom teachers to focus on student learning.

  • Support school building improvements to ensure students and staff are safe and secure and learning in a comfortable environment.
